While there is no accepted definition of "normal" bowel habits, and they differ from person to person, the general number of bowel movements considered healthy is three times a day to three times a week. Fewer than three movements a week may indicate constipation. Approximately 14% of the general population is affected by chronic constipation, which is characterised by persistently difficult, infrequent or incomplete defecation and its associated negative impacts on quality of life (1). Research into the underlying causes of constipation has revealed that the composition of the gut microbiota is more likely to be disrupted in those with constipation compared to those without (1). In a double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled study across 5 years in over 300 subjects, the probiotic formulation in Biome Lax was found to significantly improve bowel regularity, soften stool to ease bowel motions, promote complete bowel evacuations and help to reduce the occurrence of abdominal bloating (2).
